Saint Patrick's Basilica, Montreal

I wanted to share a few photos I took in one of the most beautiful Gothic churches that Canada has to offer, Saint Patrick's Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This spectacular church was built in 1847 by Irish immigrants who were fleeing famine in Ireland.

Here is a photo of the facade of the church:

The stunning Gothic interior. The pillars are 25m high and are made of white oak encased in marble:

The beautiful high altar, the sanctuary lamp weighs 815 kg and was installed in 1896:

Our Lady's altar:

Saint Joseph's altar:

One of a number of altars along the sides of the nave:

One of the stained glass windows depicting Our Lady of the Holy Rosary:

A stained glass window depicting Saint Patrick preaching to the pagan Irish King:

  1. A lovely thing.

"...made of white oak encased in marble."

Never heard of that before. I wonder if that's common up there.

  2. How glorious it would be to once again see a priest at every altar offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass!

  3. @ Kkollwitz, I don't think I've seen it in any other churches. I believe it may be a feature unique to this church in the Montreal area.
