From the Desk of the Chaplain: The Persecution of the Church in the USA

From the desk of the Chaplain of the Confraternity of St. Peter:

Dear Member of the Confraternity,

Well, there's nothing like a good-old persecution to wake up to! All of you who went to Catholic School and heard Sister say that you would all be persecuted, it looks like that time has come. If you have not yet heard, you will soon hear of the mandate from the Obama Administration that will prosecute Catholic Institutions out of existence unless they provide contraceptives such as sterilization, birth control pills, and abortion-inducing drugs in their health care plans.

While you have probably heard letters from your bishops at the pulpit today explaining what this means, let me tell it to you in English: If Catholics do not offer incense to the proverbial gods we will be persecuted. Institutions will be heavily prosecuted in the millions of dollars, many will lose their jobs, Catholic Hospitals and Institutions will be closed, society will be changed. This is not a joke.

So let us join together with our bishops in objecting to this outright persecution of the Catholic Church, and without wavering in our faith, we must stand for what we believe. This is the time to sleep with our boots on. This is the time to not even THINK to justify what we are asked to do. In the early Church our forefathers would not try to justify eating food offered to idols even if the idols are fake. They simply would prefer to die rather than defect from what they believe, even on the smallest level. Today, when it comes down to it, our Catholic Institutions are being asked to be pro choice, or cease to exist. We have tried to tell us we have a year to comply. We will not comply, not in a year, not ever.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. On the one hand you will have many non-Catholic people on the street commenting: "Oh, birth control pills are not that bad, not worth shutting down hospitals for." On the other hand many lax Catholics will be invigorated in their faith, fortified by the healthy dose of persecution that God is blessing us with. Will we be as strong as the Cristeros of not too long ago? Will we go down shouting: "Long live Christ the King"? May God grant us that grace, and may those and all the holy martyrs intercede for us in this day of holy battle!

Praying for you,
Rev. Fr. J. Fryar FSSP
English-speaking Chaplain of the CSP

  1. Catholics have one year to comply. That works out just about right, if you believe Our Lady of the Rosary, wearing the Star of Esther on Her gown, is coming back to save us in 2013.

  2. The Catholic Church will never obey this mandate, not if all the powers of Hell were to shove it down our throats. I know that moral doctrine may seem a strange and ancient thing to your administration Mr President, but understand that as Catholics, we are required to disobey unjust law. Commanded. It is our duty. Do you understand the gravity of the ultimatum you’ve made? You have placed the faithful Catholic in a position in which he must choose between obeying your mandate and obeying God. To comply with the HHS mandate will be considered a sin. Regardless of how you view your actions, do not so easily ignore how the Church views your actions — as attacking her flock. Force the mandate on faithful institutions, and faithful institutions will shut down their services. Force it on our hospitals, our universities, our schools, and our convents and we will bear the consequences of looking you, Sibelius and all the rest in the eyes and saying “No.” As it turns out, the Church doesn’t give a damn what you think — She never has cared for the powers of the world — and will resist you with all Her might. To be briefer still, and to say what those bound by politics cannot: Bring it.
